Ailinda Sawe is a successful, innovative pioneer of Tanzanian fashion with thirty years’ experience, seventeen of which she was a director for her company Afrika Sana. Throughout her career, Ailinda has strived for originality and cultural preservation for African and particularly Tanzanian haute couture.
In 2001 she led the way in research on traditional clothing industry in Tanzania, covering nine selected tribal communities. Her signature styles include Serengeti, Malaika, Tausi and Kingoni, in which the unisex Serengeti style not only resulted a win for her in 2003’s Dar Es Salaam region National Dress Competition but has also become popular wear for international conference attendees, seminar organizers and official staff for hotels and institutions wanting to display the nationality character.

B’ambi which is short for Brenda Nambi is owned by a dynamic young fashion designer from Kampala, Uganda of the same name.
Brenda has been a fashion designer since 2004 but only started her commercial fashion brand called B’ambi Fashion House in 2009. Her previous works consisted mainly of stage costumes for performing artists and custom made designs for celebrities.
In line her with the global fashion trends, B’ambi’s latest collection The Wild Prints Collection has created a modern yet “wild” fashion theme that uses African fabrics and “prints”. This elegant, stylish and funky collection is targeted towards hard working, independent women who have achieved their respect without losing their femininity and the fashion and style in them.

Diana Magessa is a fashion designer who was born in Shinyanga, Tanzania but is based in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Magessa has taken part in plethora of fashion shows and events such as Swahili Fashion Week 2010. In 2009, Magessa showcased her designs at Miss Universe Tanzania, which was held at Mlimani City in Dar Es Salaam. Following the success of her designs, Magessa went on to design national costumes for winners that took part in Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International.
Her design for Miss Earth won the Best in National Costume, which was a first in the history of Miss Earth Tanzania. She is also involved in social volunteer work that involves inspiring children to be original and creative.

Rachael Mutindi is a Kenyan fashion designer possessing a degree in Textile Sciences and Fashion Design from Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya, and with a clear invitation to breakout and celebrate life in colour.
After many years of private designing, she decided to take a bold step to start her own fashion house and after receiving rave reviews, she started her own fashion brand named after her daughter Kiki. The secret to Ki2’s uniqueness is its capacity to utilize local materials such as the Kanga creatively to come up with products that inspire pride in local culture; combine recycled materials such as bicycle tyres, rubber with a need for environmental preservation while retaining a cross-cutting quality appeal.
Ki2 exclusively designs, tailors and produces a range of skirts, trousers, kaftans, shirts, jackets, bags and much more. So far they have created complete seasons collections in ladies (spring/summer and Autumn/winter) apparel, and limited mens and kids wear.
Ki2 regularly attends various fashion events like FIMA (festival interernasional De mode Africane – Niger - 2009), Paris fashion week 2008, 2009 and 2010 and fashion shows in south of Italy, African Fashion Fair – Kenya to mention a few; they have also been featured in numerous local and international fashion magazines, newspapers and other media features (BBC – Kenyans Start to Embrace Daring Fashion), China Radio, Radio France, etc.

After 11 years, she came back to Tanzania and was inspired by the culture. 4 years since then, she’s worked for many fashion companies like Top Shop and Selfridges and this year, she and her team are working hard to put J. Majebelle on the map.

The clothing range has been attracting many, and is a sought after clothing line in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Not only that, Mapozi has also been attracting clients across the world including US, England, Japan and Tunisia to name a few.

Due to her petite stature, she quit modelling and focused on designing full time, attending Institute de Bela Artes in Maputo and Fashion College International in Nairobi. At Nairobi, she founded SturCouture in 2000, which dealt with various fashion shows in Nairobi, Magadi and Dar Es Salaam.
In 2002, she returned to Dar Es Salaam and opened up JamillaVeraSwai Studioto give local designer some heavy competition: participating in various fashion shows and designing for a growing group of clients including retail shops in Zanzibar, Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam.

The label features high quality knitted apparel produced by Kibotrade Textiles Ltd, the first Fair-trade registered textile factory in East Africa that has been awarded with the SA 8000 (Social Accountability Standard) official recognition.
Organic cottons and cotton mixes are sourced from Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius and Egypt in an array of colours offering choice to the consumer. The brand’s design ethos supports local talent, creating high quality ethically produced knitted garments using a selection of locally sourced materials that rejuvenates and revives the perception of everyday basics.
The concept of looking locally is supported further by the continual donation of 1 US Dollar for every garment sold goes to assisting in education for children at the SOS Children’s Village in Tanzania.

Kemi Kilikawe

Self-taught designer Kemi Kalikawe founded Naledi Fashion House in 2008 in Dar Es Salaam as an addition to Naledi Interior Design that was founded in 2006 in Nairobi. She always knew she wanted to be a designer from a young age, therefore after a 3 month course in Stage Design and Textile Design at Bagamoyo Art College, she went to Kenya to study Interior Design for 3 years.
She has been consulting for WaPI Arts Festival, a British Council initiative, for 3 years in which during this time she organized 2 Emerging Fashion Designers Competition featured in the first 2 Swahili Fashion Weeks.
On top of being a judge in Tanzanian modeling competition TV show Kisura, she brought together Tanzanian fashion industry stakeholders in the first ever Fashion Roundtable Discussion.
New to the Naledi brand is Naledi Fashion Institute (NFI) supported by Tanzania Fashion Designers Network, training young aspiring fashion entrepreneurs to not only be fashion designers but follow the vast array of fashion careers available in the fashion industry.

She has been consulting for WaPI Arts Festival, a British Council initiative, for 3 years in which during this time she organized 2 Emerging Fashion Designers Competition featured in the first 2 Swahili Fashion Weeks.
On top of being a judge in Tanzanian modeling competition TV show Kisura, she brought together Tanzanian fashion industry stakeholders in the first ever Fashion Roundtable Discussion.
New to the Naledi brand is Naledi Fashion Institute (NFI) supported by Tanzania Fashion Designers Network, training young aspiring fashion entrepreneurs to not only be fashion designers but follow the vast array of fashion careers available in the fashion industry.

After serving as London’s Matthew Williamson’s intern, Pooja Jeshang had enough unique expertise to be included in the Top 8 Emerging Designers in Swahili Fashion Week 2010.
In this year’s Swahili Fashion Week, she plans on showcasing her collection Jambo Afrika S/S RTW and launching her fashion line: Saffron.
